Timeline 1960-69


Johnny Theakstone  records a demo tape and posts it to the BBC.

Aug 1960

Bernard sings with the Tremolos when Johnny Theakstone is taken ill.
Johnny dies of his illness, Rheumatic Fever.   Shortly afterwards the BBC offer the band an audition in Birmingham. Johnny’s parents persuade Bernard to take over Johnny’s place and reform the band.

Feb 1961

After an audition at the BBC the group start appearing on Saturday Club & other BBC Light Programmes & Tommy Sanderson becomes their manager.

17 Sep 1961

Shane Fenton & The Fentones make their debut on Easy Beat radio show.

Sep 1961

Release 1st single I'm A Moody Guy / Five Foot Two on Parlaphone Records. It spends eight weeks in the charts reaching number 22. The recording was made at Abbey Road under the production oif George Martin.

3 Oct 1961

Shane Fenton is launched at a press reception at the Centre of Sound, Archer Street, Piccadilly Circus, London.

Fentones release their own single Lovers guitar / The Mexican

Start a nationwide Larry Parnes tour, with Edan Kane, Billy Fury, The Karl Denver Trio, The Tornados, Peter Jay & the Jaywalkers, Joe Brown & Ricky Stevens.

Jun 1962

Cindy's Birthday / It's Gonna Take Magic single released, reaching number 19.

12 Jul 1962

Opens Mansfield & District Society for the Mentally Handicapped annual fete.

Sep 1962

Fentones release their own single The Breeze & I / Just For Jerry.

Oct 1962

Too Young For Sad Memories / Your Telling Me Single Released.

I Ain't Got Nobody / Hey Miss Ruby Single Released.

Start a nationwide Larry Parnes tour with Joe Brown, Susan Maughan, Jess Conrad, Rolf Harris, The Tornados, Heinz, Al Page & the Martell Brothers .

First Shane Fenton solo single A Fools paradise / I'll Know released.

The presenters were Keith Fordyce and David Gell (who had both previously worked on "Thank Your Lucky Stars")


Tours the northern club circuit, doing caberet, with his wife Iris, as  Shane Fenton & Iris. They take their act to holiday resorts in Spain, France, Germany,The United States and even on the Trans-Alantic Liners.


Re-forms  Shane Fenton & The Fentones later to become “The Shane Fenton Trio”.
